Piyo Core, MRTT Run, Downpour Run

Sunday Piyo

Monday was an early morning Piyo session first thing.  I knew it was going to warm up outside quickly.  While the boys worked on picking up their toy room, I got busy with Piyo Core.  I was also able to get in my arm weights before our morning adventure.

Once my Piyo workout and arm weights were completed, it was time to walk up to the neighborhood pond for some morning fishing.  While it was mostly frustrating, he did catch ONE fish!!!  We should have stopped right then though.

Monday’s Workout:

  • Piyo Core
  • 80 reverse crunches and bicycle crunches
  • 62 leg raises
  • 40: tricep dips, push ups, squats, lunges, donkey kicks, fire hydrants, clam shells, bridges, Russian twists, ankle taps, scissor kicks, and dead bugs
  • 20: leg and hip extensions, single leg deadlifts, supermans, and burpees

Tuesday Run

I had my 4:20am alarm set, but beat it and woke up at 4:15am!  BOOM! I am sure my husband appreciated the lack of alarm in the morning.  I grabbed my phone and checked the weather app right away.  High 70s already.  UGH!  I had laid out a tank top, but decided against it.  The other girls were going to have to deal with a little jiggle during our run.  I rolled out of the garage at 4:43am with Mizunos and Balegas on my feet, Nike shorts and headband, a VSX sportsbra, a Garmin watch on my wrist, Higo armbands…AND WATER!  There was no way I was leaving the house without lots of water when it was already that warm outside!!!

EIGHT!  There were eight of us in the #DawnPatrol on Tuesday morning.  Eight moms who woke up super early to make sure they could pour into themselves for a little bit to start their day!  Getting up early and running is a lot easier when I know these ladies are going to be out there sweating with me.

Our first attempt at a selfie showed off some of our glowing gear.  It is pitch black when we start.

Enter the flash.  We are all there. Maybe not awake completely, but there.  One step at a time will get us where we need to go.  Our Moms Run This Town Northern Cincinnati group is awesome!!!

Kristin, Hillary, and I took off to lead the ladies out.  I am pretty sure, I was sweating by my tenth step.  Chatting with these ladies helped keep my mind off of the fact that it was ridiculously steamy.  Humid.  Oh, so humid.  I say ‘helped’, because it still crossed my mind at times.  Hillary even ditched her shirt mid run and joined in on the #sportsbrasquad with me!

We were excited when we saw a strip of sprinklers going off.  We decided that on the way back, we would cross the street and run through them to cool off some.  Those silly things, as soon as we were two feet away, they went down.  Our disappointment was like a kid who just dropped their ice cream cone on the ground.  UGH!  Luckily, a new section popped up.  You better believe, I ran all the way down those suckers.  My sweat was now mixed with water and I was drenched all over.  It was totally worth it though!  We looped around to our cars and dropped Kristin off at 3.4 miles so she could get to work.

Hillary and I took a quick water break and got back out for another loop.  I had hit a button on my watch or something during the first part of our run and it was not showing the correct mileage.  Therefore, I stopped it completely when we took our break.  As soon as I stopped it, the correct mileage came up.  I should have just kept running with it, but I did not know.  So you get two watch photos and I had to do some extra math while I was out there.  Hillary put in one more mile loop with me.  She was pushing it, too!  I think that first loop was in the 8:40s maybe even.  I remember looking down at my watch and asking if she was doing okay, because her pace was spectacular.  She said yes and kept plugging along.

When we reached the cars again, I dropped her off, took another drink of water, and got back out on the path.  No chit chatting today.  I knew I had to be leaving by 6:15 to get home in time for my husband to go to work.  I really wanted to get six miles in on Tuesday.  The sun was starting to come up.  I had some daylight and actually turned off my flashing Higo armbands.  The air seemed to lighten up just a tad.  I may have been going crazy, but it did seem not as thick that last mile or so.

I finished up what I thought was about a 10K (I got it) and headed for my car.  I snapped a quick sweaty selfie and said goodbye to the few girls who were still talking. I was smart and brought a towel with me for this run.  I was able to wipe myself down a bit and use it to sit on in my car.  Yep, I was that gross!

I got home. The boys were already awake and wanting breakfast.  I put their breakfast on the table.  I ate a Fiber One bar and a banana.  I chugged a bottle of water.  Then, I got to my rep work.

Tuesday’s Workout:

  • 6.22 mile run
  • 70 leg raises
  • 40: tricep dips, push ups, squats, lunges, donkey kicks, fire hydrants, clam shells, Russian twists, ankle taps, reverse crunches, scissor kicks, dead bugs, bicycle crunches, regular crunches, and jack hammers
  • 20: leg and hip extensions, single leg deadlifts, supermans, and burpees
  • 3:00 planks

I skipped my arm weights and hit the shower.  I had to get the boys out the door and to the zoo to meet up with friends.  A couple more miles were walked there, I am sure.

Wednesday Run

Today’s run will be one we will not be forgetting anytime soon!

The morning started with some unplanned thunderstorms rolling through the area.  I was bummed that I was not going to get to take the boys to the bike path and get some miles in outside.  The treadmill was calling my name.  I really did not want to spend my possible final run for the week on the treadmill and getting cut short because of the dread.  We waited it out and kept an eye on the radar.  It cleared up and the sky lightened to where I thought the sun may even start to pop out.  YAY!  We got dressed and loaded up.  I figured the bike path would be a lot of fun after a storm.  I knew the waterfalls would be flowing and that there would be a ton of puddles for N to ride his bike through.  You remember how fun it is to ride through puddles as a kid, right?!?

I NEED A BIGGER CAR!!!  No mini vans for this family.  A bike rack may have to be installed at some point.

I was hoping to get four miles in.  Two miles out and two miles back to the car was the plan.  We took our time going out.  We stopped at all of the little creeks and waterfalls.  It was C’s first time on the bike path with N and me.  He was excited to finally see what we are always talking about.

Mr. N rode through every single water puddle he could find!  This is the sign of a good summer bike ride…

I tried my best to keep up with him.  Now that he has a little bigger bike and I am pushing the stroller, he can go faster than me.  I told him the rule, if he gets to where he can no longer see me, he has to turn back, circle around, and come get me.  He definitely is a good training coach that is pushing me to keep going hard.  I will not let my kiddos down!

The waterfalls were sooooo flooded!  I reminded N that the volunteers had been cleaning out these drains the last time we were out on the path.  Good thing we have nice people who give their time to keep our bike path functional!!!

And, oh, the boys look so dry at this point in time.

We came up to a friend in the second mile.  We tried to stay back and not scare her off.  For a second, she turned toward us and the boys thought she was going to come say hello.  Eventually, she ran off into the woods.

Up just a little bit farther, we came across these two though!  We spotted them way up on the hill.  They just watched us for a minute. We moved on as to not scare them.  Adorable!

“Hey look, Mom!  I can ride with one hand”!!!!  It is these small moments in time that I am thankful beyond belief.  I am thankful I get to stay home with these two boys.  I am thankful I get to see the one hand trick.  I am thankful I get to explore and create memories with them daily.

We hit the 1.8 mile mark on the bike path from where we had parked.  The bike path was a little flooded at this point.  While N rode through it, he mentioned turning around.  I thought it was a great idea, because I did not want to run through the puddle.  Right as we turned around my phone started alarming.  A flash flood warning had been issued for our area.  The river was definitely getting high.

After we turned around, Mr. C was asking for a snack and Mr. N was asking me to take a picture of his muddy leg.  I told them when we got to the next waterfall we would stop.  Up about another quarter mile or so, as promised, I took a picture of N’s fantastic muddy leg…

and Mr. C got a snack.

That would be the final picture of our bike path run today!

As N finished off his applesauce, we started to feel rain drops.  I moved us back underneath the biggest tree I could find to help shelter us.  Yeah, that did not help much.  It was coming down and coming down FAST!!!!  BIG raindrops were landing on our heads, shoulders, arms, and everywhere.  I tried to pull up my trusted weather app (HA!  The one that I had checked before we left the house.  The one that had a radar with the rain already past us).  Nothing was loading.  The rain kept coming and then the thunder roared.  That was our sign to not try to wait it out and head for the car as quickly as we could.

N took off!  I mean, took off!  I did my best to keep him in my sight.  The stroller handle bar was squishy, my shoes were squishy, I was drenched all over, my shorts were sticking to me, and I kept on running.  The rain was coming down so fast and hard that it was hard to see.  Normally, I would run with my head down in this situation, but I needed to keep N in my sight.  I continuously wiped off my eyes and chugged along.  I wished I had a hat on my head or a visor.

The thoughts of a run in the rain are completely different when you have kiddos with you.  While I did quickly think to myself, “This is amazing and feels awesome”!!!  I also thought, “Okay, we are going to get to the car.  They can strip down before they sit in their seats.  I have beach towels in there for swimming afterward.  Thankfully.  They can ride home like that.  Just get them to the car.  Please do not have any lightening”.

At one point, I looked down at my watch to see our pace.  8:40!  8:40 pushing a stroller in the rain!  No wonder I was breathing so heavy.  Talk about some hardcore training practice.  There was no stopping or slowing down though.

We made it back to the main road.  No cars were coming.  We did not even stop.  We ran right across and straight to the car.  The boys jumped in the car the quickest I have ever seen them do so.  I DUMPED the water out of the stroller.  Yep, water in the bottom, water at the feet, water in the seat, water everywhere.  I somehow squeezed the bike in on the first try this time (it took me five attempts when I loaded up in the garage to go to the bike path).  I covered my seat with the final beach towel and took a seat.

AHHH!!!  That was crazy!!!

Splits: 10:09, 10:17, 9:09, 6:51

Hey, at least I was not dripping in sweat after this one.

We got home and changed our clothes.  Dry clothes felt pretty awesome.  Our post run swimming pool play date changed to an inside play date.  The beach towels, still thought they went to the pool.  As N said, “We don’t need to go swimming today.  We already did”!

How long until these bad boys are dry again?!?!?!

Other than the thunder, it really was a fun little memory we created.  I asked them, “Wasn’t that fun?  Riding in the rain?”  N replied, “Yeah.  But it could have rain less hard”.  He then went on to say, “We won’t be forgetting that run”.  I could not help from smiling from ear to ear.  “No Son, we sure will not”!

After the play date, lunch, and a three year old in bed for a nap, I finally got to complete my rep work.  I will be honest, I wanted to skip it.  But I promised myself I would get all my rep work in these few days so that I could take the next few off if I wanted to.

Wednesday’s Workout:

  • 3.74 mile run
  • 100 leg raises (OUCH!)
  • 50: crunches, reverse crunches, bicycle crunches, and jack hammers
  • 40: tricep dips, push ups, squats, lunges, donkey kicks, fire hydrants, bridges, clam shells, mountain climbers, Russian twists, and deadbugs
  • 20: leg and hip extensions, single leg deadlifts, supermans, and burpees
  • 3:05 planks
  • arm weights, 10 reps, three rounds

Really, how long until my running shoes are dry again?  Can I throw them in the dryer?  Will they shrink? Help!

365 Days… When the pandemic hit, I found myself a bit out-of-control. Like many of you, routines were flipped upside down in an instant. Suddenly, I was a 24/7 parent, teacher, coach, and actual physical presence for two growing boys. The gym closed down; my job went with it. I am thankful that I did…

Disney Dopey Challenge 2020 One year ago today, I completed my third marathon, which happened to also be my first Disney Dopey Challenge! (Little did I know that my 2020 racing days were numbered). I am very thankful to be able to say that I “raced” each of my distances last year. Those four distances…
